Tips for spray tanning children

Spray tanning children is very different from spray tanning adults. And if you choose to work on children, you need to know the facts and the challenges associated with child clients.

The children you are most likely see are those involved in beauty competitions. Some pageants will actually spray tan children before the contest begins. If a parent comes to you with a child who needs that service, chances are that person is looking for more personalized service than can be had at an actual pageant.

Assuming that (1) the parent has helped the child exfoliate properly and (2) dressed them in light, loose clothing before a session, make sure you do the following:

1. Observe strict safety measures Conduct the session in a well-ventilated area and make sure the child wears eye and nose protection. You can typically trust adult clients to close their eyes and hold their breath, but children can be very unpredictable.

2. Book extra time for the session Children sometimes won’t sit still as you try to spray tan them. So you may have to contend with a lot of stops and starts. Try playing games with the child like “Simon Says.” You may even consider offering small rewards (like a balloon or other inexpensive items) for good behavior. Above all, be patient.

3. Educate parents on spray tan aftercare for kids Advise the parents to keep the spray-tanned child dressed in a long-sleeved top and full-length pants until the child actually has to start preparing for competition. They may also want to limit – or cut out – activities until that time as well, especially if they involve water (swimming) or anything that will cause a child to sweat.

4. Consider doing the spray tan in-home The name of the game with kids is getting them to feel comfortable. And what better place to make that happen than where they live? If you have mobile capacity, consider offering the session at the child’s home.
