Spray tanning FAQ
People new to spray tanning will have a predictable set of questions about the spray tan process and products used. Following are six of the most common queries you will get along with answers to help your clients understand the basics:
Q#1: What is airbrush tanning?
Airbrush tanning is the process whereby specially formulated solution gets applied to skin. Clients stand with arms and legs spread out while a trained salon professional walks around and sprays the bronzing solution on.
Q#2: What are tanning solutions made of?
The main ingredient in spray tan solution is DHA, dihydroxyacetone, is a colorless, natural glycerin derivative. It interacts with the amino acids in dead skin cells to produce a brown color on the top epidermal layer.
Q#3: How should I prepare?
Twenty-four hours before a spray tan session, clients should exfoliate skin using a body scrub like our Sea Salt Scrub. This allows the tanning spray to stick to the outer layer of skin and not flake off. It will also help extend the life of the spray tan itself.
Q#4: Is spray tanning safe?
Airbrush tanning is a recommended alternative to both outdoor sunbathing and indoor booth tanning. This is because spray tanning does not expose skin to harmful UV radiation and the possibility of eventual cancer.
Q#5: What about spray tans and showering/bathing/swimming?
Moisture and water do not mix well with airbrush tans. Clients should refrain from taking showers or baths for at least the first 4 to 6 hours after airbrush tanning. They should also minimize pool activities because pool chemicals will strip skin of all color. Ocean bathing is slightly better, but should also be done with caution.
Q#6: How long does a spray tan last?
