How to Extend a Spray Tan
We want to share our experience here at New Gorgeous with both our salons and their customers. It helps customers to know the best way they can extend their spray tans so they get the biggest bang for their spray tanning buck.
With proper preparation and maintenance, a spray tan will typically last from seven to 14 days. And there are cases in which the tan will actually last longer than 14 but this is dependent on a number of factors including some things a client has no control over – age and skin type.
However, there are things that can be done that will make a tan last as long as possible.
Don’t Use Bodywashes or Soap The first thing to know is that the skin cells have a natural turnover rate. A spray tan will last as long as the skin cells take to regenerate. Unfortunately for spray tanners, many skin products on the market actually accelerate this turnover rate and therefore shortens the length of the tan. Body washes and soaps which contain chemicals like citric acid or alpha hydroxy acid do this. While these additives make the skin feel soft and smooth, which is their job, they destroy a sunless tan. So the first point of business is to avoid such products.

Use a Tan Extender After a shower, we suggest use of our Tan Extender with Bronzers. It is an alcohol-free bronzing moisturizer formulated with anti-aging peptides. It has just the right amount of DHA to continue the beauty of a spray tan and it has a streak-free formula. It is through use of this extender that some clients have had their tans last longer than two weeks. In fact after using it, some clients get compliments that they look just like they came out of a spray tanning booth though it has been a week or more since they had their tan.
Prepare Properly Before the Tan Proper preparation before a spray tan is also vitally important to the length of time your tan will last. Again, bodywashes and some soaps also contain hydrating ingredients such as a lotion or an oil. These substances create a barrier on your skin which prevents a spray tan from adhering properly. The correct thing to use is New Gorgeous’s Mini-Shower Exfoliant. It combines loofah particles blended with a mild surfactant to help cleanse the skin. It will create the proper base for your sunless tan.
The truth of the matter is that the average spray tan lasts from seven to nine days only. But it is proper care as outlined above, that allows a tan to be extended further to 14 days and beyond.
