Flawless skin part 1

Great results are the key to your success as an airbrush tanning professional. That’s why we’re dedicating our next two blogs – which will be available as downloads – to helping you create the beach-bronzed look that will keep clients coming back for more.

This week, we cover everything your clients need to do before they go under the gun.

STEP 1: Shower & exfoliate

The active ingredient in spray tan solutions is DHA, which interacts with the topmost layers of skin. This makes removing dead skin cells absolutely critical. Otherwise, a tan may not turn out evenly.

The day or evening before a spray tan session, a client should wash with a soap that is as free of moisturizers as possible. Any residue will leave a barrier and inhibit the spray tan from developing properly. The person should then gently exfoliate skin with a product like NG’s Mini Shower.

STEP 2: Groom with care

If the client is female, she should shave or wax 24 hours before her session to avoid redness and irritation. Facials, manicures and/or pedicures should also be done beforehand.

If the client is male, he should shave the morning of his appointment. When shaving after he has received his spray tan, he should try to use a new razor to minimize the potential for early fading: the same goes for women.

STEP 3: Keep skin clean & dry

On the day of the session, a client should keep the skin in as natural a state as possible. That means not using any of the following:

  • moisturizers

  • deodorants

  • perfume/cologne

  • body oils

  • makeup

Long hair should be kept off the face and neck and all jewelry should be removed.

STEP 4: Know what to expect during a session

Clients should wear loose-fitting, dark clothes and flip-flops that won’t rub against treated areas and potentially take off the tan.

Just before the actual session, they will also need to rub barrier cream onto their knees, elbows, palms, soles, fingernails and toenails. This helps to ensure that those normally light-colored areas don’t get an unnatural-looking tan.

If client choose to wear a bathing suit, they need to make sure that it is one that they won’t mind subjecting to tanning spray, which can stain many fabrics.
