Airbrush Tanning Scars and Wrinkles
Very few people have skin that’s without blemishes of one kind or another. So it’s likely that the majority of clients you’ll see will have things acne blemishes, stretch marks or accident scars. Spray tanning can help conceal many of these imperfections. At the same time, though, it’s important to remember that cosmetic bronzing will affect scars in different ways, depending on such factors as scar age and type.
The most important thing to tell your clients regardless of whether or not they have scars is that they should prepare for their spray tan session by doing a thorough exfoliation of their skin. Removing excess/dead skin will help ensure even coloration and help prevent the dark splotches that can ruin the overall effect.
Airbrushing tanning can be very helpful for clients who have mild to moderate acne scars. In most cases, it helps reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation scarring, which usually takes the form of round, red or purple spots left behind as pimples heal. But if your client has severe acne scarring, it’s a good idea to test the effect a spray tan will have on a small area before covering larger areas. That’s because cosmetic bronzing may actually cause those scars to become even more noticeable.
Clients with stretch marks can also benefit, but again, the success of a spray tan will be contingent on the kind of stretch marks they have. Women with older stretch marks that have been healed for a few years are more likely to notice a positive difference after a spray tan session. Those with newer stretch marks will find that affected skin will not absorb the tanning lotion as well and may actually make the stretch marks themselves more visible.
Spray tanning may also help people with scars left over from accidents. Like new stretch marks, new scars tend to resist absorbing DHA, the main bronzing ingredient in spray tan lotions. Older scars, however, may absorb DHA more readily to blend in more readily with the undamaged skin around them. In some cases, some scars may actually darken more than surrounding skin, as can rougher areas such as knees and elbows.
